Yana Zinkevych, the founder of the Hospitallers, is on the TIME100 Next 2023

Every year, TIME100 Next recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions and have an impact on people's lives. This year, Yana Zinkevych's story, the founder of the volunteer medical battalion Hospitallers, is on the TIME100 Next 2023 list. Here is her story:

"For nearly a decade, Yana Zinkevych has been instrumental in saving Ukrainian lives. The 28-year-old veteran is the commander of a Ukrainian civilian medical battalion known as the Hospitallers —not to mention one of the country’s youngest members of parliament.

In 2014, when conflict with Russia broke out in eastern Ukraine, Zinkevych was preparing to study medicine. She paused her studies to aid the injured, soon founding the Hospitallers to equip others to do the same. Yana Zinkevych herself led over 200 wounded to safety before being injured in 2015, and under her leadership, the group has assisted and evacuated thousands of service people and civilians."

The Hospitallers are volunteers who do not receive funds from the government. All medical equipment, vehicles, uniforms – they purchase these items with their own funds and through donations. They do an incredible job and risk their lives every day to save others. Thanks to people's support, they provide themselves with everything necessary for providing emergency medical assistance. Also, thanks to donations, the Hospitallers training center continues to operate, where paramedics receive training and preparation to save lives.
