21-year-old paramedic Kateryna from Ternopil (nicknamed "Birdie") charmed many people’s hearts with her cute smile and beautiful singing in the Azovstal plant shelter.
"Birdie" is an actress by profession, but she is regularly involved in volunteer activities. After finishing medical courses, she joined the volunteer medical battalion "Hospitaliers" and started helping civilian and military people in the East of Ukraine.
In the first days of the full-scale war, Kateryna came to rescue people in one of Mariupol's hospitals. Russian troops bombed this hospital so the girl and other paramedics ended up at the Azovstal metallurgical plant.
Kateryna's mother, Svitlana, looks at her daughter's photos every day and listens to the songs she sang in the Azovstal shelter. With these songs, Kateryna wanted to draw attention to wounded civilians and military personnel who stayed in the basements of the plant and needed urgent help, says her mother.
During one of the conversations, when Kateryna had already been at Azovstal for two months, helping the wounded and sick, her mother asked her what she had eaten that day and whether she had groceries. The answer was very uncertain. Kate began to tell about the bread. During this period she only ate a piece of "Borodinsky" bread.
A few days later, Kateryna warned her mother that military and civilian people, including women and children, were leaving Azovstal.
"In the morning, she warned that there would be no contact for a very long time, asked to hold on, to wait for her, to believe, to love. I have no information at all from the day she left the factory. After that, I saw a video of her being searched. But I don't know anything about how she is" says Ms. Svitlana.
For many months, Svetlana did not receive any news from her daughter, because Kateryna was in captivity with the military.
But this week, many mass media from different countries and all of us followed the exchange of prisoners of war. Among the people who returned to Ukraine again were foreign soldiers who joined the defense of our country, fighters of the Azov unit, who bravely defended Azovstal, and Kateryna, our "Birdie".
The girl did not lose heart and with a smile communicated with the delegation and everyone who came to meet the prisoners of war. Now she wants to gain strength and do everything possible to free the defenders of our country who are still in captivity.
We are delighted that "Birdie" has finally returned home! #Hospitallers #Paramedics #UkraineParamedics #HospitallersUkraine #HospitallersUK #HelpHospitallers #Ukraine #SupportUkraine #HelpUkraine #StandWithUkraine #HelpUkraineNow
